LUKE SKYWALKER LIGHTSABER LE
STAR WARS: EPISODE VI RETURN OF THE JEDI

Master Replicas' reproduction of Luke's lightsaber from Star Wars: Return of the Jedi captures all of the fine details of this noble weapon.  Master Replicas examined the original filming props and compiled information on color, finish, and dimensions to achieve an extremely accurate replica of this lightsaber.

Of particular interest is the fact that there were actually several versions of the lightsaber used during the filming of Return of the Jedi.  The hero version was machined entirely of metal and featured a removable "control panel" on top of the control box.  This revealed interior circuitry  that at one time apparently powered the small, triangular LED's on the side.  This detail never appeared on camera, however.  Also on this version, a small set-screw is visible near the emitter tip.  This was used to secure the metal rod that stood in for the lightsaber "blade" during filming.  Later, in post-production, the energy beam was added digitally an an animated beam of light.

This lightsaber appeared in about half of the scenes in Return of the Jedi, including the battle on Jabba's sail barge.  For some scenes, this metal version was replaced by one of several resin copies.  This was done so that the more expensive hand-made metal prop would not get damaged during the filming of action sequences.

the second version of Luke's lightsaber is somewhat different than the hero prop, and less dramatic.  It was composed of machined-metal parts, as well as resin components covered in silver duct tape to simulate a metal finish.  Curiously, it also incorporated the center band from an antique Graflex flashgun around the mid-section.  This same type of band also appeared on Obi-Wan's and Luke's lightsabers in Star Wars: A New Hope.  This second version of Luke's lightsaber is seen hanging on Luke's belt when he is talking with Leia in the Ewok village as well as on the arm of the Emperor's throne when speaks to Luke aboard the Death Star.

For the last few years, the metal hero lightsaber and a resin stunt version have both been on public display in the Star Wars: Magic of Myth exhibition.  As an owner of Master Replicas' Luke Skywalker lightsaber prop replica, you can take pride in knowing that you possess an identical copy of one of the most recognizable and valuable film props on display in this tour.
