During the filming of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi different versions of the Luke Skywalker lightsaber were used.  The hero version-which appears in about half of the scenes in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, including the battle on Jabba's sail barge-was machined entirely from metal.  One of its interesting features was a removable "control panel" on top of the control box which revealed interior circuitry that at one time appeared to have powered the small triangular LED's on the side-a detail was never visible onscreen.  The hero version also had a small set-screw near the emitter tip which was used to secure a metal rod that served as a placeholder for the lightsaber "blade" during filming.  In post-production, that energy beam was digitally rendered as an animated light beam.
