JEDI TRAINING REMOTE LE
STAR WARS: EPISODE IV A NEW HOPE
STAR WARS: EPISODE II ATTACK OF THE CLONES

The Jedi training remote is one of the most intriguing props in the Star Wars universe.  It actually appears in two films: A New Hope and Attack of the Clones.  In Episode IV, Luke originally used the device as part of his early Jedi training aboard the Millennium Falcon.  In Episode II, a number of remotes are seen hovering next to the young Padawan trainees learning their craft at the Jedi Temple.

The training remote is actually a rudimentary type of droid used by the Jedi to hone their lightsaber skills and sensitivity to the Force.  It uses an anti-gravity system to allow it to hover at various heights.  For lateral positioning, the remote uses small air jets to maneuver about.  Sensors covering the surface of the remote report the surrounding conditions to the on-board computer.  Eight tiny laser emitter ring the perimeter of the unit.  The lasers' output can be adjusted from a mild shock up to a strong stun setting.  The intensity of the lasers can be altered depending on the skill of the trainee.

Only one filming prop was created for Star Wars: A New Hope.  It consisted of two 6-inch diameter plastic hemispheres glued together.  Numerous tank parts were then glued on by the ILM staff to detail the surface.  The chrome plated laser emitters are actually rims from a 1/24-scale truck model.  This conglomeration was then cleverly painted and weathered by ILM to match the warn appearance of the many other devices in the Star Wars universe.  For Attack of the Clones, the remotes seen on-screen were digitally rendered based on the original prop.  No physical props were used for this film.
